Making a Vest Work With More Than Flannel

The trick is the hem line, not the color.

A vest has a reputation problem. It gets pictured over a heavy plaid shirt, in a rural setting, and then filed away as a garment for one specific look. That is a shame, because it is one of the most practical layers there is: it keeps the core warm while the arms stay free, which is exactly what most days between seasons actually require.

The Hem Rule

The single decision that makes or breaks a vest is where its hem falls relative to the layer underneath. Aim for the vest hem to sit at or slightly above the hem of the shirt or knit below it. A vest that stops well short reads as accidental, and a vest that swallows the layer underneath makes the whole outfit look shorter.

This is why the same vest can look considered over a crew neck sweater and unfinished over a long untucked shirt. Nothing changed except the relationship between two hem lines.

Over a Knit

A fine-gauge crew neck or merino sweater under a vest is the easiest version of this to get right. The knit provides the sleeves and the texture, the vest provides the structure through the body. Keep the two in a similar tonal family and the combination reads as one garment rather than two.

Over a Shirt, Tucked

A tucked shirt gives the vest a clean vertical line to sit against, and this is the version that works in an office or anywhere with a dress code. Keep the collar outside the vest, not trapped under it, and leave the vest open unless the fit through the chest is generous enough to close without pulling.

Under a Jacket

A vest is also a mid layer. Worn under an unlined jacket, it adds warmth through the core without adding a second set of sleeves, which is what makes two jackets over each other feel bulky and restricted. Choose a slimmer vest for this and check the armhole does not bunch when the jacket sleeve goes over it.

Color, Last

Color is the part everyone starts with and the part that matters least. A vest in a neutral, one or two shades away from what it sits over, will work with almost everything already in a closet. Reserve the brighter option for when the rest of the outfit is quiet, and it will look deliberate instead of loud.
